A cologne that doesn't announce itself — it settles in.
Woody, hushed, like a memory slowly resurfacing.
There are fragrances that seek attention and fragrances that deserve to be approached. Marescialla belongs to the latter category. Santa Maria Novella — whose officina has existed since 1221 in Florence and whose first formulations were born in the reserves of herbs, spices, and aromatic woods of a Dominican convent — has constructed this cologne with a deep and restrained register, in contrast to the light citrusy notes of most contemporary colognes. It's a scent of libraries, old wood paneling, leather, and rare spices.
The composition opens with a luminous and spicy tension. Citrus fruits briefly illuminate the material — a clarity that lasts just long enough to let in mace, that rare spice extracted from the outer covering of nutmeg, with warm, slightly peppery, and almost leathery facets. Centifolia rose and cedar then build a heart of great restraint — the rose is floral without being sweet, the cedar straight and slightly angular; together they give the composition its elegant structure. Sandalwood, patchouli, and oakmoss settle in the base with a dense and slightly resinous woody depth — hushed, persistent, with a discreet nobility that lasts for hours on the skin. Marescialla does not seek brilliance. It endures.
Marescialla is the scent for those who understand that deep things only reveal themselves to those who take the time to listen.

A word from Maison Diaphane
Marescialla is the SMN cologne we recommend to those who want something truly different — not a summery freshness, but a woody and spicy material of unusual depth for a cologne. Mace is key: rare, warm, slightly leathery, it anchors the entire composition in a realm of high perfumery that belongs to another era.

Learn more about Marescialla +
Marescialla by Santa Maria Novella is an amber unisex cologne created by the world's oldest perfumery officina, founded in 1221 in Florence. Its woody and spicy composition, centered on mace and sandalwood, explores a rare territory for a cologne — warm, deep, hushed — rooted in the tradition of great Florentine aromatic preparations. Available at Maison Diaphane, official reseller in Angers, for €135. Free shipping for orders over €100 (in France).
Its olfactory pyramid revolves around a woody and resinous sandalwood-patchouli-oakmoss base, preceded by a floral and structured centifolia rose-cedar heart, and opened by citrus and mace in a spicy and slightly leathery freshness. In cologne concentration, the composition unfurls an unusual depth and persistence for this format.
Marescialla is a timeless woody and spicy amber cologne with a discreet sillage, ideal for autumn and winter, worn equally by women and men.
What is mace and why is it rare in perfumery?
Mace is the dried outer covering of nutmeg — a spicy material with warm, slightly peppery, and subtly leathery facets, different from nutmeg in its texture and warmth. In perfumery, it is a rare material, rarely used alone — Santa Maria Novella makes it the signature opening note of Marescialla, giving it a historic and sophisticated spicy character not found in contemporary colognes.
What is the difference between Marescialla and Eva — SMN's two structured colognes?
Eva is citrusy and spicy — lemon, bergamot, pepper, cedar, vetiver, tobacco. It is fresh at the opening and settles into a dry woody scent. Marescialla is amber and woody — mace, rose, sandalwood, oakmoss. It is immediately deeper, more hushed, closer to a home fragrance. Eva for daytime, Marescialla for evenings and the cold season.
What season is Marescialla made for?
Mainly autumn and winter, and all late afternoons. Its woody and spicy depth flourishes with freshness. In summer, its amber warmth can be worn in the evening with moderation — it is a cologne for cold seasons and intimate atmospheres.
Is oakmoss still allowed in perfumery?
Natural oakmoss is subject to increasing IFRA restrictions due to its allergenic potential. In Marescialla, its use complies with current regulations — the composition meets European safety standards. It brings the characteristic foresty and slightly earthy character of great chypre and woody compositions.
