The barbicaja is an endemic shrub of the Corsican maquis — evergreen leaves, discreet fragrance, silent presence. It is under this name that Véronique Spoturno, great-granddaughter of François Spoturno, also known as Coty, chose to name her house's brightest and most spontaneous floral. Composed by Christopher Sheldrake, Barbicaja is a declaration of natural elegance: neither constructed nor demonstrative — just a floral that smells like a perfect day.
Freesia, lily of the valley, and hyacinth open with an almost airy floral freshness — three spring flowers combined in an immediately bright and slightly powdery accord. The heart blossoms with a sunnier, more Mediterranean character: bright and slightly creamy orange blossom, velvety and slightly carnal tuberose, delicate and precise grandiflorum jasmine, a fruity and slightly velvety apricot accord that disturbs the composition with an unexpected sunny touch. And the base settles in soberly — dry and elegant cedar, slightly smoky and mineral vetiver, very discreet patchouli, barely perceptible vanilla — a base that structures without ever weighing it down, and prolongs the sillage with restraint.

Barbicaja is the Corsican name for the Mediterranean buckthorn, an evergreen shrub with glossy leaves that grows in the Mediterranean maquis. Its presence in the perfume's name is a tribute to the Corsican origins of François Spoturno, born in Ajaccio in 1874 — and a geographical and emotional anchor in the house's identity.
