A tuberose seen through the prism of an industrial night.
Galbanum, tomato leaf, tuberose, leather, styrax — vegetal, dense, captivating.

Bakelite was the first synthetic plastic in history — a hard, black, slightly phenolic material invented in 1907. Naomi Goodsir used it to evoke a night: a dark, industrial night, in which a tuberose grows despite everything, green and untamed. Composed by Isabelle Doyen — former perfumer for Annick Goutal, author of major works in French niche perfumery — and handmade near Grasse, Nuit de Bakélite is the most unique and ambitious composition in the collection.

The opening is sharp and immediately green — slightly woody and resinous galbanum, slightly sulfurous and dry tomato leaf, slightly green and powdery violet leaf, slightly herbaceous angelica — an opening of dark and precise vegetal density, not seeking immediate seduction. In the heart, tuberose settles into its greenest and least creamy facets — untamed, crossed by slightly powdery iris and karo karounde, a rare West African flower with slightly creamy and animalic facets. And the base is anchored in the deepest materials — dry leather, slightly balsamic and smoky styrax, resinous labdanum, deep tobacco, slightly rosy guaiac wood, davana with slightly fruity and liquor-like facets — a base of exceptional persistence and complexity.

Nuit de Bakélite is the fragrance for those who know that a flower can be dark — and that this is precisely what makes it unforgettable.

    Maison Diaphane's Note

The most radical composition in the Naomi Goodsir collection — and one of the most unique tuberoses in contemporary niche perfumery. Isabelle Doyen's signature tomato leaf-galbanum-karo karounde accord is of absolute originality and precision. It is essential to smell it on the skin — Nuit de Bakélite is the perfume that reveals itself most differently from what one would imagine after reading the pyramid.

Nuit de Bakélite Eau de Parfum by Naomi Goodsir is a unisex green floral fragrance from the niche perfumery house founded by Australian milliner Naomi Goodsir, based in France. Composed by Isabelle Doyen and handcrafted near Grasse, it combines galbanum, tomato and violet leaves, and angelica in the opening, tuberose, karo karounde, and iris in the heart, and leather, styrax, labdanum, tobacco, davana, and guaiac wood in the base. Available at Maison Diaphane, official retailer. Free delivery from €100 (in France).

Its pyramid combines a sharp green vegetal opening, a floral, dense, and slightly animalic tuberose-karo karounde-iris heart, and a dark and very persistent leather-styrax-labdanum-tobacco base. A unisex green floral with a present sillage, suitable for autumn and mid-season.

    What is karo karounde?

Karo karounde is a rare flower originating from West Africa — mainly Guinea — with slightly creamy, slightly floral, and slightly animalic facets. Very rarely used in mainstream perfumery, it is one of the signatures of perfumers who source rare raw materials. Isabelle Doyen, whose career at Annick Goutal was marked by the use of unusual flowers, uses it here to give tuberose a creamy and slightly mysterious dimension.

    Is tuberose very present?

Yes — but nothing here resembles a classic tuberose. It is treated in its greenest and least creamy facets, framed by the sharp vegetal opening and the leathery-resinous base. It is a tuberose that has lost its conventional sweetness to gain depth and character.

    Why "Bakelite"?

Bakelite — the first synthetic plastic, invented in 1907 — is a hard, slightly phenolic material with a slight characteristic odor that evokes industry and the modernity of the early 20th century. Associating this material with a flower as organic as tuberose creates a contrast between the vegetal and the synthetic, between nature and the industrial night. A totally Naomi Goodsir artistic gesture.

    For which season?

Autumn and spring — its vegetal density flourishes in mid-season, when the air is fresh and the scents of vegetation are present. In winter and in the evening, its leathery-resinous base takes on its full dimension.
