Santa Maria Novella, whose Florentine officina has existed since 1221, approaches this material with its characteristic botanical precision. The officina knows plants in their reality — not as effects to be produced, but as living materials that deserve to be respected in their complexity. It is present but never dominant — that is precisely the tour de force of this composition. Patchouli dialogues with jasmine and rose rather than imposing itself, and sandalwood in the base sometimes takes over for the woody depth. It is clearly perceived, but it doesn't "smell like patchouli" in the sense of the heavy, earthy compositions that harmed its reputation.
