Marc-Antoine Corticchiato, independent perfumer and doctor in plant chemistry, founder of Parfum d'Empire, is known for his baroque, dense, and sensual compositions — Aziyadé, Ambre Russe, Fougère Bengale. Le Cri is the absolute antithesis. A composition that deliberately chooses lightness, luminosity, and the immaterial — and which demonstrates with remarkable ease that Corticchiato masters excess as much as restraint.
In this Eau de Parfum concentration, the composition opens with an aldehydic, slightly fruity luminosity of great elegance. Aldehydes, bergamot, and raspberry create a slightly soapy and airy freshness — aldehydes provide this particular, almost immaterial and slightly powdery texture, which immediately distinguishes great classic florals from modern compositions. Raspberry adds a slightly tart fruity touch that gives the opening a precise vibrancy and lightness. Turkish rose and Florentine iris then arrive in the heart in a floral material of exceptional delicacy and nobility. Turkish rose — with slightly fresh and fruity facets, lighter than Damascena — combines with Florentine iris in a powdery and slightly earthy accord of remarkable depth and elegance. Florentine iris, extracted from the iris root after three years of drying, is one of the most precious and complex raw materials in perfumery — its powdery, slightly violet, and slightly earthy facets give the heart all its nobility and velvety texture. Ambrette, musk, patchouli, and woody notes settle in the base in a soft and slightly fruity musk base of remarkable persistence and discreet sensuality — ambrette, a plant-based alternative to animal musks, with slightly musky and slightly fruity facets, gives the base an organic and carnal softness without ever weighing it down. This long and costly process produces one of the most precious raw materials in perfumery, with powdery, slightly violet, slightly earthy, and slightly woody facets of exceptional complexity and nobility. In Le Cri, it is the central material of the heart — it gives the composition its velvety texture and inimitable character.
What are aldehydes in perfumery and what is their role in the opening?
Aldehydes are synthetic organic compounds — the same ones that made Chanel N°5 famous in 1921. In perfumery, they provide a particular texture: slightly soapy, slightly airy, slightly powdery, and very luminous. They amplify florals and give them an almost immaterial dimension.
