There's a subversion in Oud Cardamome that La Closerie des Parfums doesn't announce — it lets the composition reveal it. One expects warmth, intensity, the frontal attack of an oriental oud. And the first seconds seem to go elsewhere — fresh, herbaceous, almost vegetal. Bergamot, oregano, artemisia, and cardamom create a sharp, slightly camphorated opening that is pleasantly disorienting. Then the composition ignites. And that's when you understand where it was heading all along.
In this Eau de Parfum concentration, the heart arrives with a spicy and slightly animalic density that changes everything. Pepper, bay pimento — an Antillean berry with facets that are simultaneously clove-like, spicy, and slightly mentholated — and labdanum build a warm, vibrant, and almost hypnotic accord. Bay pimento is the central note of this heart — neither conventional pepper nor ordinary spice, something more complex and more enveloping at the same time. Labdanum brings an amber and slightly animalic resin that binds the spice in a deep organic warmth. Smoky accords, tobacco, patchouli, and guaiac wood finally settle in the base with a dark, textured depth — dry and slightly leathery tobacco, guaiac wood with its slightly medicinal and smoky facets, smoky accords that envelop the whole in a dense and persistent matter.
