Al Khaluf is a coastal desert in Oman where white sand dunes descend to the sea. The heat there is dry and pervasive — warming saddle leather, bringing out tree resins, giving the air an almost tangible texture. The house founded by Jérôme Di Marino has captured this sensation in an accord that smells exactly like its name suggests: sugar on leather.
Cinnamon opens with immediate intensity — spicy, slightly burning, luminous. Caramel and amyris arrive at the heart in a creamy, slightly woody sweetness that tempers the cinnamon's warmth and begins to establish depth. And leather and labdanum in the base — this cistus resin with amber and slightly animalic facets — assert themselves in a warm, sensual, deeply satisfying accord. What is labdanum?
Labdanum is a resin extracted from the Cistus Ladanifer, a Mediterranean shrub. Its scent is amber, slightly animalic, slightly honeyed and slightly woody — it is one of perfumery's oldest raw materials, and the natural base for many leather and amber accords. In Sugar Leather, it gives the base its characteristic depth and warmth.
Is the leather very prominent?
It is deep but not aggressive — caramel and labdanum soften it and give it an enveloping rather than dry dimension. It's a gourmand leather, not a harsh leather. It gradually asserts itself over the hours.
