Suma Oriental takes its name from Tomé Pires' 16th-century account, Suma Oriental, which first described the trade routes between the Indonesian islands and the rest of the world — the sandalwood, spices, and precious resins that traveled these distant seas. The house founded by Jérôme Di Marino has transformed it into a dense and narrative perfume, smelling exactly like the cargo of these ships.
The opening is immediately gourmand and slightly boozy — dark and slightly bitter cocoa pod, warm and slightly sweet rum, cypriol with earthy and slightly smoky facets. Patchouli takes over in the heart — deep, slightly earthy, slightly sweet — occupying the entire space alone, giving it remarkable weight and richness. And the base slowly expands: creamy and slightly vanilla tonka bean, slightly smoky and slightly rosy guaiac wood, smooth sandalwood, soft cashmere wood, and musks — a woody base of exceptional complexity and longevity.

Its pyramid combines a gourmand and slightly smoky cocoa-rum-cypriol opening, a deep and earthy patchouli heart, and a woody and creamy sandalwood-tonka-guaiac-cashmere wood-musk base. A unisex woody oriental with intense sillage, for autumn and winter.
What is cypriol?
Cypriol — or nagarmotha — is a nutgrass tuber whose essential oil has slightly earthy, slightly smoky, and slightly woody facets. Widely used in oriental and Middle Eastern perfumery, it brings a dark depth to the opening of Suma Oriental, amplifying cocoa and rum without weighing them down.
Is patchouli too prominent?
It is the central note — asserted and fully occupied. It is deep and slightly earthy, but the woody-creamy base softens it and integrates it into a balanced overall composition. This is a high-quality patchouli, very different from conventional heavy and stubborn patchoulis.
