    Additional information

Founded in 1221 in Florence, Santa Maria Novella is the oldest artisanal perfumery and pharmacy in the world. Originating in a Dominican convent, the house has been crafting balms, ointments, and remedies from medicinal plants since its inception. Its ancestral expertise has been passed down to the present day, blending tradition and excellence. Renowned for its iconic perfumes, candles, and preparations, it embodies Florentine elegance. Santa Maria Novella offers a unique sensory experience, rooted in eight centuries of history.

    Capraia Island, a June morning.
    Maquis, sea spray, sun-warmed rock.

There are perfumes that describe nature. Cala Rossa makes you feel it. Santa Maria Novella — the Florentine officina founded in 1221, heir to eight centuries of knowledge about medicinal and aromatic plants of the Mediterranean basin — built this cologne around a specific landscape: the wild island of Capraia, in the Tuscan archipelago, with its dense maquis, salty sea spray, and the dry, golden light that belongs to summer days on the Mediterranean.

The composition opens with an almost striking vegetal freshness. Wild lavender, mint, and eucalyptus strike immediately — aromatic, clean, slightly camphorated — like a breath of fresh air at the top of a seaside hill. Immortelle and wild fennel then take over in the heart, bringing a dry, slightly honeyed light — the warmth of a garrigue in midsummer, that particular scent of aromatic plants heating up under the sun. Rosemary and myrtle in the base prolong the sensation with a herbaceous and slightly resinous trail, ancient and deeply rooted in the botanical tradition of Santa Maria Novella. Cala Rossa does not evoke the sea with a synthetic iodized accord. It evokes it through the plants that line its shores.

Cala Rossa is the scent of a landscape you carry with you — and that returns every time you close your eyes.

    A word from Maison Diaphane

Cala Rossa is the cologne we recommend in spring and summer to those who want to smell something truly vegetal — not a generic freshness, but a precise landscape. The immortelle and wild fennel at its heart are a rare olfactory signature not found elsewhere. A scent of a Florentine public square and a Tuscan beach all at once.

Learn more about Cala Rossa +

Cala Rossa by Santa Maria Novella is a unisex citrus cologne created by the world's oldest perfumery officina, founded in 1221 in Florence. Its name evokes a cove on Capraia Island in the Tuscan archipelago — a territory of wild Mediterranean maquis, sea spray, and aromatic plants. Available at Maison Diaphane, official retailer in Angers. Free delivery from €100 (in France).

Its olfactory pyramid is structured around a bright and herbaceous immortelle-wild fennel heart, opened by wild lavender, mint, and eucalyptus in a striking vegetal freshness, and anchored by rosemary and myrtle in a herbaceous and slightly resinous base. In cologne concentration, the composition expresses all its vegetal lightness and botanical precision.

Cala Rossa is a vegetal and sunny Mediterranean cologne with a discreet sillage, ideal for spring and summer, worn by both women and men.

Where does the name Cala Rossa come from?

Cala Rossa refers to a cove on Capraia Island, a small wild island in the Tuscan archipelago between Corsica and Tuscany. It is a preserved territory, covered with dense Mediterranean maquis — lavender, rosemary, myrtle, immortelle — bathed in sea spray and sunlight. Santa Maria Novella was inspired by it to create a cologne that evokes this specific vegetal and saline landscape.

Is the immortelle in Cala Rossa the same as in Frédéric Malle's Contre Jour?

Same material, very different use. In Cala Rossa, immortelle plays a role of dry, golden light within a Mediterranean vegetal accord — it is discreet, blended into the landscape. In Contre Jour (Annick Menardo), it is the central note, worked in all its honeyed and slightly curry depth. A beautiful example of the same material in two radically different contexts.

Aren't mint and eucalyptus too cold or medicinal?

They quickly balance out upon contact with immortelle and wild fennel in the heart. The opening is lively and aromatic — slightly camphorated, yes, but never medicinal. It evaporates in a few minutes to give way to the dry warmth of the garrigue. It is precisely this transition between vibrant freshness and solar warmth that defines the character of Cala Rossa.

What is the difference between Cala Rossa and Acqua della Regina — the two SMN colognes available at Maison Diaphane?

Acqua della Regina is Santa Maria Novella's foundational cologne — Italian citruses, lavender, rosemary, soft musks. It is the classic Florentine cologne, bright and balanced. Cala Rossa is wilder, more vegetal, more Mediterranean — maquis, garrigue, immortelle, fennel. One evokes the city, the other the island. Two expressions of the same botanical savoir-faire, two distinct landscapes.
