Melograno is one of Santa Maria Novella's most iconic compositions — and one of the most difficult to summarize, because it is unlike anything known. Not a fruity cologne in the contemporary sense. Something far older, far more laden with meaning: the evocation of a tangy and fleshy Mediterranean fruit, a symbol of Florentine opulence since the Renaissance, treated here as a ritual material rather than a fresh note. The composition opens with immediate floral and fruity generosity. Ylang-ylang, bergamot, rose, orange, and cyclamen deploy a dense and luminous material at once — floral without being sweet, fruity without being light, with a slightly tangy richness that gives the whole its unique character. Depth arrives in the heart with oakmoss, orris, vetiver, fern, tobacco, and cedar, which build a complex green and slightly woody base — tobacco adds a dry warmth, vetiver an earthy anchor, moss an almost ceremonial forest dimension.
