Unika is a minimalist and elegant niche perfume house, born in the heart of Grasse, the cradle of French perfumery. Each fragrance celebrates the purity of carefully sourced and enhanced natural raw materials. The unisex and bold olfactory creations offer a refined and sincere sensory experience. Unika prioritizes simplicity, quality, and emotion, far removed from the artifice of traditional luxury. Authentic and accessible, this is a signature perfumery designed for those who appreciate the essential.
Vanilla, stripped of its sugar. Dark, dense, rooty — a depth you never sought, and now can't let go of.
✦Maison Diaphane Favorite
Licorice in perfumery is a rare and often misunderstood material. It's associated with candy, childhood, something too overpowering or too sweet. Véronique Stambouli, perfumer for the Grasse-born house Unika, does exactly the opposite: a refined, almost rooty licorice, dark and structuring, that pulls the composition downwards rather than towards sweetness. C2 – Vanille Réglisse is a gourmand for those who don't like gourmands — or rather, for those who sought a gourmand that met their exacting standards.
In this Eau de Parfum concentration, the composition opens with a luminous and slightly fruity lightness. Mandarin, bergamot, and candied fruits establish a warm clarity — not sweet, candied in the sense of a slow, deep richness — that prepares the ground before the central material arrives. Licorice then takes center stage with remarkable presence and precision — dry, slightly aniseed, almost vegetal in its rooty rather than candy dimension. Saffron adds a spicy, golden warmth that elevates it, patchouli an organic depth that anchors it. Vanilla, leathery notes, and benzoin settle in the base in a material of exceptional richness and density — here, vanilla is woody and slightly smoky, leathery notes give it an almost tactile texture, benzoin a resinous sweetness that prolongs everything for hours. C2 – Vanille Réglisse is a fragrance that deepens — it smells different at lunchtime and different again in the evening.
C2 – Vanille Réglisse is the fragrance for those who know that the best things are always those you thought you wouldn't like — until you've truly smelled them.
C2 – Vanille Réglisse is our favorite from Unika — and the fragrance that surprised us most in the collection. Véronique Stambouli's licorice is not what one expects: dry, refined, almost mineral. The saffron in the heart is remarkably precise. And the vanilla in the base — woody, slightly smoky, supported by benzoin and leather notes — is the most mature and contemporary version of this material we've smelled in a long time. A gourmand without compromise.
C2 – Vanille Réglisse Eau de Parfum by Unika is a unisex gourmand fragrance composed by Véronique Stambouli for the Grasse-born house Unika. A Maison Diaphane favorite. It explores vanilla in its darkest, most adult dimension — woody, slightly smoky, supported by refined licorice, saffron, and benzoin in a composition of remarkable depth and elegance. Available at Maison Diaphane, official retailer in Angers, for €133. Free delivery from €100 (in France).
Its olfactory pyramid is built around a refined and structured licorice-saffron-patchouli heart of great precision, preceded by a luminous and slightly fruity mandarin-bergamot-candied fruits opening, and prolonged by a deep and enveloping vanilla-leather notes-benzoin base. As an Eau de Parfum, the composition gradually deepens and develops its full richness over 8 to 10 hours.
C2 – Vanille Réglisse is a dark and dense gourmand fragrance with a noticeable sillage, ideal for evenings and cold seasons, worn equally well by women and men.
Doesn't licorice make the fragrance too sweet or too candy-like?
That's precisely Véronique Stambouli's tour de force. The licorice in C2 is treated in its rooty, dry dimension — aniseed, almost vegetal, slightly earthy — and not in its confectionery version. The saffron and patchouli in the heart darken it and anchor it in something deep and structured. It's an adult licorice, which pulls the composition towards depth rather than sweetness.
What is the difference between C2 and Frustration by ELO — two dark gourmands in the catalog?
Frustration (ELO) is an obsessive and tense vanilla — cumin, rum, vinyl guaiacol, intense sillage. It creates a permanent dissatisfaction. C2 – Vanille Réglisse is a more structured and elegant gourmand — refined licorice, saffron, leather notes, noticeable sillage. More accessible in sillage, more complex in material. One is tension, the other is depth.
Why is it Maison Diaphane's favorite from Unika?
Because C2 – Vanille Réglisse does something rare — taking an olfactory family often perceived as too accessible (gourmand) and giving it a dignity and depth that places it in the realm of high perfumery. Véronique Stambouli succeeds here with a uncompromising gourmand composition, at a price well below major houses, with a material that competes without complex.
What season is C2 – Vanille Réglisse best for?
Mainly autumn and winter, and all evenings. Its dark gourmand depth and density flourish with coolness. In summer, its warmth can feel heavy during the day — it's a fragrance for cold seasons and moments that deserve an enveloping presence.
